Pompeii Floyd: A Pink Floyd Tribute

Pompeii Floyd are a tribute to Pink Floyd who focus on the band’s early 1970’s material, including the concert film they faithfully recreated on its 50th anniversary: “Live At Pompeii”. Initially a four-piece, the group embarked on a series of live shows covering songs from the band’s initial release, “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn,” through the “Obscured By Clouds” release.

The group expanded to a six-piece to take on Pink Floyd’s more ambitious work, including the entirety of the infamous release: “The Dark Side Of The Moon,” in honor of it’s 50th anniversary. They also faithfully recreate classic hits from “Wish You Were Here”, “Animals”, and “The Wall”.

Pompeii Floyd features JT Curtis (Broadway’s “Let It Be”) fronting the band on guitar and vocals, bassist James Preston (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) drummer Hector Lopez (Tito Puente), and myself, Dino Covelli (Surrogate Band). Rounding out the lineup is singer and guitarist Meghan Rose (Xena: Warrior Musical) and saxophonist/keyboardist Colleen Farquhar (All Revved Up).

Notes

For me, this project started in late 2019 when rhythm tracks were delivered to me and I began the process of tracking Rich Berta on guitars, keyboards, and vocals. Rich is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, session player, and live performer in the New York Tri-State area. We’ve been jamming together for years, but this project focused on recording and producing his original songs. It was a complete pleasure for me to work on this project. Rich brought nine beautifully written songs to the table, and I took pleasure in the process of bringing them to life.

I began the mixing process while we were still in the tracking phase, which helped provide the direction of ‘the sound’ we were beginning to develop; indie rock with prog influences and a retro vibe.

The songs were mainly written for guitar or piano and vocal, so to flesh out the songs further it seemed natural to add classic instruments like retro synths, and electric pianos like the Wurlitzer and the Rhodes. We built upon these textures with layered vocals and harmonies until all the pieces fit together.

With the pleasure of a self-imposed release deadline, we took the time we felt necessary to settle on the production choices and getting the mixes to our liking. We released early ‘work-in-progress’ mixes of “Grow Back” and “Easier” as singles back in July and August, respectively. The final mixes of these songs fit more cohesively with the rest of the album as a whole.

For me this brings a happy ending to an historically awful year. We hope this album brings you comfort and joy as we soon begin 2021. Enjoy!
